What Does Medicare Part A Cover?

In general, Medicare Part A covers:

Hospital Care

You pay:

  • Days 1–60: $1,156 deductible for each benefit period.
  • Days 61–90: $289 coinsurance per day of each benefit period.
  • Days 91 and beyond: $578 coinsurance per each “lifetime reserve day”.
  • Beyond lifetime reserve days: all costs.

*Medicare Part A does not include long-term or custodial care.


You usually don’t pay a monthly premium for Part A coverage if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. If you don’t qualify and have to buy Part A coverage, you can pay upwards of $451 per month.
